Extensions to be wary of

The last 3 letters of the name of the file is the extension. Any of the extensions listed below are suspicious. Contact the sender by phone or directly before doing anything with them:

.html.js

.xxx.xxx

.js

.xx

.asp

.bat

.com

.exe

.htm

.html

.htt

.lnk

.pif

.scr

.vbs

any files with two dots for an extension are suspicious.

javascript

any extensions with less than 3 characters

Here's a sneaky one:
.vbe One virus has a two dot name, with the last a .vbe extension. It's the second extension and is 10 spaces away from the first one which is .txt the user sees
file.txt
and may not see the full name
file.txt.vbe

And here's one more, not really a virus, but just another way to get something that isn't meant for them:

.rtf This one is recent and a surprise. .rtf is for Rich Text Format and is often used to send word processing documents since it's compatible with pretty much all word processors. There was a virus in June 2001 that came from Russia that used an .rtf document to attach a 'trojan horse' that took password information and sent it to another computer. Technically it wasn't a virus since it didn't spread to other computers after that.

Needless to say, it goes on and on and on..........
